Anyone who has actually bothered to learn anything about Thailand knows that prostitution isn't anymore prevalent there than in many major cities in the world.
Take Manila for example. There are few places a guy can walk at night with out being propositioned by a girl. Not so in Bangkok.
Sure, they have some red-light districts, and I suppose that the openness of them have contributed to the reputation Thailand has about being the sex capital of the world, but it just simply isn't true. In fact, per capita, prostitution is more prevalent in most major American cities. The difference is, in America you find it on dark street corners and in back allies and it's usually associated with drug addiction and pimps.
Okay, sorry, I didn't mean to rant, but that image of Thailand really is a misconception.
To answer your question though, yes, most people in the tourist areas (because that's where the red light districts are), including prostitutes, speak at least some English.
To ME: It might surprise you to know that I actually know quite a lot about the background of the girls you're speaking of. In fact, I've volunteered a lot of time (I know I'm not the poster here who has) working to help kids in disadvantaged areas. I volunteered with a group that worked to help kids in the Sa Kaeo province. Many of whom were addicted to Yaba, or the product of sexual abuse. We helped them find the suitable homes and got them enrolled into programs that could provide them with a proper education. I also volunteered in the Mae Hong Son area to help teach English to hill tribe's children. So, yes, I'm aware of the situations.
But I'm also aware that the Thai culture and Buddhist religion don't view sex the same way we in the west with our Judeo-Christian values tend to do. I'm not saying I'm in favor of prostitution, but I'm merely hesitating to climb on my high horse and past judgment like so many in the west tend to do.
So maybe you can consider this before you call me small minded, or a hater.
Humbly,
Twelve

I lived in Thailand for a while and have many friends, both male and female, that are prostitutes and they ALL speak good English.
Most of what other people have written here is complete ignorant rubbish! Their are brothels in EVERY city, town and village and if visitors could read Thai they would realise this. Most prostitution caters for the domestic market i.e. for Thai men. Those that cater for foreign tourists only account for about 5% of the total trade.
Of all the prostitutes I know and have known ( I shared a room with one for 6 months ) not one was forced into the trade by pimps or poverty ! They choose to do it because it is easy, well paid work for them. Sums of 100000 baht per month are not uncommon for these people ( a foriegn English teacher makes 30 - 40000 baht per month ) If you dont believe me TALK to them the next time you go on holiday there and you will be suprised at what they tell you.
Dont feel sorry for them or believe what you read in the press about them. They do it through their own free will and laugh at people ( usually foriegners ) that believe they are exploited..
The trade is MUCH more prevelant in Asia than it is in any Western society anyone that tells you different is either a liar or a fool. It is, and always has been part of Thai culture along with the practice of having a " Mia noi " ( little / second wife ).
I hope this helps.

Its not as prevalent as most people who have never been there think. Most people think that Thialand is all about prostitutes and sex and thats not the case at all. For some reason the media seems to only report about that, or maybe people only pay attention to Thailand on the news when they are hearing bad things about it. The prostitutes speak english. Everybody in Thailand speaks english except for maybe the really older people or people in the northeast areas where it is very poor (this is also where the prostitutes come from so most of them have learned english after they have moved down south to become prostitutes). All the signs in major cities in Thailand are in 2 languages, thai, and english. Like the other person said, Amsterdam is more prostitution and even Nevada, USA because they are much bigger areas. The prostitution in Thailand is mostly in 1 small town, Pattaya and a few plazas in Bangkok. Its a very big country and has alot more to offer then just prostitutes. Thailand people are the nicest people on earth so if you go there, dont exploit them. They dont deserve that. Respect them because they respect all life.

Why do you westerners keep having this fixation that sex is prevalent throughouot Thailand? Why none of you has taken the whole of Denmark to be a sex capital but only Amsterdam?
You hear from other people and you are so damn sure that sex is easy in Thailand. And you have not even been there. This sounds like a joke already. Next time, just go and ask the police there. You will get thrown into the slammers just like anybody else. Many of the sex joints are run by foreigners and they are undrerground, not open. It is against the law. So whatever sources you hear from, take it with tons of salt.

Travelling through Asia, I found that prostitution is definitely more prevalent in all Asian countries than in North America. Sex in Asia is much cheaper, and since Asia is so far away from tourists' homes, these tourists are more likely to 'experiment' with sexual behaviour. And prostitutes are quite easy to find in any tourist area, contrary to what some are saying here. They are looking for foreign men with money... or the people that are forcing them into having sex with tourists are looking for foreign men with money. The government of Thailand issues cards that 'prove' that the women have tested negative for HIV and AIDS.
The objectification of these women sickens me. They are incredibly intelligent and many have a strong grasp of English. Most have learned English by nothing more than carrying conversations with tourists.
To all those who are going to bash me for knowing so much about prostitution in Asia.... I am someone who is against the objectification and disrespect of any person. I am also someone who believes there is value in knowing what is going on in my world.
Edit:
to peanutz... I have been to Thailand... 13 times. True, prostitution is not prevalent in ALL parts of Thailand (ie. the rural parts), but there is no denying that it is extremely prevalent in tourist areas. And in these areas, prostitution is VERY open. There are buildings in Bangkok (I have seen with my own eyes) that have women sitting in the window. You can have any one you point at for only 1000 Thai Baht (approx $30). Have you been to Thailand? Prostitution is officially illegal there, but unfortunately those laws are rarely enforced.
to twelve: I'm a female, not a man. Why are you haters all bent on judging others? I believe that instead of making small-minded judgements of others, it's important to get the entire story. In order to understand how to solve a problem like the exploitation of these women, one must first understand their situation. Just something to consider...

Many do. Indeed, in most of the world, a great number of people will speak English. Have you ever noticed in film from abroad, esp. BBC broadcasts, that many of the signs will be in English? English is fast becoming the universal language.
Besides, how much do you really need to say to her?

The titanic majority of the therapeutic massage parlors are flawlessly legitimate and you'll get larger excellent therapeutic massage external of the purple mild district of Pat Pong . Generally those areas are as riskless as you permit them to be .... And FYI, no one turns out to provide a hoot approximately legality of of Thailand's no.four supply of revenue after Timber , rice and tourism.
