It is possible to shoot lead shot out of a rifled barrel, but it will foul the rifling badly, requiring extensive cleaning, and you'll get very poor groups.
If you can't swing a new Remington Barrel for it for shot, Mossberg does make replacement Remington barrels for far less than the Remington ones.

You can, but I wouldn't advise it. The shot will deteriorate the grooves in the rifled barrel. If you want to use it for anything other than slugs, you need to get a smooth-bore barrel. There are many places to find one, like e-bay, www.auctionarms.com or www.gunbroker.com. All 3 of these sell replacement barrels for your Remington 870 shotgun cheaper than you can find them at Remington, Cabella's or Midway. Get the correct barrel before you try any of the shot through it. Good luck and be safe....

Generally, some deformed shot flies off in odd directions and there's a relatively empty spot in the center of the pattern. Keep looking.
