I ran into JJ Yeley at a dive bar in Dover DE the Friday before the race in September.
Drivers are allowed to come and go as they please at the track as long as they maintain their obligations to sponsors and their team.

I can only answer for my particular area, but here in Indianapolis, yes. While out and about in the downtown area it's not uncommon to see NASCAR/IRL/F1(although that won't happen any longer)/NHRA teams eating, shopping, merry-making on their respective weekends. The biggest names in NASCAR seem to shun the public for the most part, not that I can blame them. I'd not be too happy if I had to inturrupt a date at a club every time some fan wanted an autograph or just to "hang out with a star".
Too many people have too little respect for these drivers, and their private lives. They do a job, same as you do. My opinion has always been, at the track, a driver should do anything they can to accomidate the fans. However, outside of the track, the fans need to have the respect to leave that same driver alone and let him have his life away from his job.

Don't know much of their itinerary but have meet Bobby LaBonte at a local Pizza Hut.And saw Mike Waltrip at a Cracker Barrel Restraunt.
But aslong as they act like any other John Doe they are free to do their thing.
About 2 years ago, maybe 3.Junior,Elliot Sadler and Jamie McMurray were in Panama City Beach,Florida at a restraunt(Harpoon Harrys). An intoxicated guest started on Junior and getting into his face, the guest threw a punch toward Junior and somehow the guess got decked.Rumor said it was Junior but others said it was a waiter yet others said Sadler grabbed the guest until Police arrived.
Very little was said about this sice it was an off week.
The guest slept it off in the beach jail.

I ran into Kyle Petty and his wife at an Atlanta area Red Lobster around 2003. They waited in the lobby for a table just like every one else.

When I lived in Richmond Va, I was a host at a restaurant, and most of the drivers came in for supper at night.

Why wouldn't they be? Obviously they aren't allowed to dink before a race, but they gotta eat somewhere, right?
