After all it is not something they would find in the wild so they would have no instint for it. I find even when I put them in a new cage with new layout they take only a few moments to learn how to use the new equipment. Also can I put different varietys of hamster together in the same cage

They are very inquisitive little animals, and will quickly discover how to use the wheel, even if they've never seen one before.

Don't put different types of hamsters together, they don't get on. It would be potentially dangerous, as they may fight and sustain injuries or even kill each other. Also don't ever put two syrian hamsters together (the large ones) as they will fight to the death. Smaller breeds of hamsters can live happily together in colonies, but only if they have sufficient space and resources. Always keep an eye on groups and handle the hamsters regularly to make sure there are no injuries from fighting - if this happens you will need to separate them.

I would suggest buying a few good hamster books and perhaps joining a local club. There are also some interesting websites - http://www.towyvale.co.uk/ http://www.hamsterrescue.org.uk/ and if you would like to stay in touch with other hamster owners / breeders there are a number of email groups.

its a new game to them and they learn quickly. My hamsters are learning new tricks all the time. And to your second question, no would be the answer, you have to keep different varieties separately, i wanted a chinese and russian dwarf hamster together but was told by the pet shop that you cant do that.

Have fun with your new hamsters!

Yes, they figure it out by exploring & playing on it. Our dwarf hamster didn't have a wheel when we adopted him (he's from a rescue so I don't know if his former ppl had given him one) but he was using the wheel that we gave him failrly quickly & he obviously enjoys it. It took him several days tho, before he felt brave enough to explore his multi-level cage but he's happilly adjusted now.
