What skin is it off your nose? I leave you to yours, why the [profanity] can't you leave me to mine?
You trench more atheists in their beliefs with questions like this, rather than converting us.... The more times I see this question, the higher my aversion to people like *you* who insist that I need 'saving'. Please go away.
Oh, and it's 'accept'. You won't convince any atheist with aweful spelling.

The correct usage of the word "accept" v. "except" makes a big difference in this question.
"Accept Jesus Christ into one's heart" is a catchy phrase, but it really has no meaning other than to actively assume an unquestioning stance regarding the issues that one's church has already decided. In most evangelical denominations, this habit is an active surrendering of one's own cognitive processes. It's a declaration of helplessness and obedient consent.
I bet you feel as though your convictions are being challenged by my claims. It's okay to feel this way, but it's really not my intent. "Accepting Jesus into one's heart" is a subjective thing. Some people pretend to do it and are convincing. Some convince THEMSELVES that they've done it, but are deceiving themselves. It's a risky thing, to give up your own mind and judgment for your denomination, and it totally makes evangelical Christianity look cultic and sinister.
I hope you take these thoughts with you, because many people who claim to have accepted Jesus shut down at the presence of these thoughts, and simply assume I'm headed straight for Hell. And that is inherently and irresponsibly closed-minded.
The shortest answer to your question is this. Evangelical Christians make their creed look very cultic, dangerous and threatening to people not raised within the church's system. When "spreading the word" becomes an unsuccessful endeavor, the failure is interpreted as outside, evil forces rather than the inadequate and condescending approach they're probably taking.

Why won't you accept Zeus as the all powerful god of the earth? You risk spending eternity being devoured by the horrible beasts of the underworld..

Because I can't convince myself to accept fiction as truth. The bible is so ridiculous to me that I just can't accept it as fact. Believe me, my parents tried very hard to have me accept it, but I just couldn't believe that nonsense to be true.
Science, with all it's faults, is infinitely more believable - at least there is SOME proof of scientific theory.

For the same reason that YOU won't accept Allah, Vishnu, Buddha, Quetzalcoatl and the Flying Spaghetti Monster into YOUR heart. It's just plain hard to accept something into your heart when you don't believe it even exists. And don't try to convince yourself that there's a difference between not believing in God and not believing in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, because there isn't, and any atheist will attest to that.

Well, I did. He left the place a mess, put his feet up on the furniture, had pets when I specifically told him not to, and kept having loud parties. I had to let him go.

We do except. We just don't accept.
Pray for some grammar.
Real reason- because I am educated and not a fool who needs fairy tales to get me through hard times.

Because he was not anyone special. He was a teacher of ethics, and the most famous b@st@rd to have ever lived (a b@st@rd being someone who was born without married parents), but he wasn't the "lord and savior" you claim he is.

Do christians keep asking this question 20 or 30 times a day because you have nothing better to do or because you really expect the answer to have changed from five minutes ago when someone else asked it?
