after i woke up from general anaesthesia they just said i should be drinking a lot of water, which made me vomit.
is this normal?

Yes, unless you are known to have sickness from GA, then they will put a IV in but you will have to stay longer in Hospital. I have GA and no problem, my Sister has GA and like you vomits afterwards so now they give her the drip and no problem. Good Luck

I think it depends on what you have had done and how long you were "out" for.
Drinking lots of water straight away is never a good idea as it can make you vomit.

no,you're not supposed to drink until you can sip water, drips are provided during the op normally,

sounds like you drank too much too soon

but anaesthetic makes some people sick

Fluid resucitation/hydration is based on clinical need, if it aint broke why fix it, it is very easy to push someone into overload, also additional risk of infection, oral fluid is fine if tolerated, to drink "a lot" of water after G.A. is silly.
