I have a 12-week old kitten who over the last several days has been pooping soft stools. It isn't quite diahrrhea - they are formed when they come out but as soon as you touch them they turn mushy (sorry, but that is the only way to describe them!). My kitten has always had a little bit softer stools than his brother but these have just seemed a bit softer still. I've taken him to the vet, he has no worms or parasites and is just getting over an eye infection (he was on terramycin). Should I be very worried about this? He is completely normal in all other aspects: super playful, sleeps well, eats normally, drinks a lot of water and does not make any sort of strainful noises when in the bathroom....just the soft stool. Help!

I don't know if you need to be worried since parasites have been ruled out. On the other hand, you may need to worry about your fabrics.

I had a similar problem with Poppy. The vet said it was "kitten stomach" and she would grow out of it. But she didn't.

What you can do is to start trying new foods. You may find one that will make things better - and you may find one that will make things worse. It's good for kittens to eat a variety - keeps them from imprinting on a particular food. So go right ahead and experiement. Add new foods slowly to avoid digestive upsets, though.

If you see improvement, keep on with the new food. If not, try another.

FWIW, you'll probably have better luck with canned foods. If you have a sensitive kitty, it's probably reacting to filler/allergens in the food. You'll find less of those in canned foods.

Or it may very well be "kitten stomach" and he'll grow out of it. But I still recommend introducing some canned and trying different kinds.

If he's been checked out by a vet (fecal samples taken and ckd) and is said to be negative for parasites and worms, then there's probably nothing to worry about. The antibiotic could be the culprit, or the fact that he "drinks a lot of water" could be causing the looser stool, too. If he's eating canned food (watery) AND drinking a lot of water, that just makes more "mushy" poop! Also, don't give him any REAL (cow) milk. That will cause "the runs", too. Good luck, and congratulations are your new "babies".

This could very well be from the antibiotic. After about 3 days post meds, see how they are. If there is still some concern, I would have the vet double check a stool for Coccidia or Giardia.

Antibiotics can cause soft stool a lot of times. If you have mentioned this problem to your vet and he/she is not concerned and you have tested for parasites I wouldn't be concerned. You could try getting a bland prescription food, if he has food allergies this could help, but you can only get from a vet.

I wouldn't worry, its probably a reaction to the antibiotics, they change the normal bacteria in the bowel which can do this. If it gets really runny or bloody or anything or if he stops eating or changes his behaviour, then I'd take him back to the vet.
