What is the deal with this non-sense about 40GB system not being able to play PS2 games, and 80GB version can only play certain ones. But 20GB and 60GB version can play PS2 games?

Did Sony do this on purpose? Are they doing anything to correct this?

Even though I don't plan on playing much PS2 games on PS3 (I probably won't. I'm planning on playing mostly 1080p games), it does aggravate me when I found this out.

The 20GB and 60GB PS3's had the Emotion Engine chip inside of it and that's why they can play nearly every PS1 and PS2 game.

Sony didn't use the Emotion chip in the 80GB, instead they used Emulation Software to make the 80GB PS3 able to play some PS1 and PS2 games. By not installing the Emotion Engine chip, Sony cut manufacturing costs and therefore, they can sell the 80GB PS3 for a cheaper price than if if had the Emotion Engine chip in it.

And the 40GB PS3 can play PS1 games, but it can't play PS2 games. Sony didn't add backward compatibility for PS2 games to the 40GB PS3 to cut costs as well. Basically, Sony wanted to close the gap on the prices between the Xbox 360 and the PS3. By taking out the Emotion Engine chip and removing PS2 backward compatibility for the 40GB PS3, Sony has made the PS3's price a little more attractive for people that couldn't previously afford a PS3.

Putting the emotion engine chip from the PS2 into the PS3 is more complicated and expensive than it sounds. By taking it out and offering a cheaper PS3 they were able to decrease costs and increase sales. You can't really blame Sony for that.

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB versio, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.

We just had a bad experience with this. We had bought a 60 gig PS3, but we found out it didn't play PS2 games. The 80 gig can , and yes they did that to take your money. But the compatibility quality is no different from the other systems.

yeah they cut out a bunch of the ports too, sony is evil, pretty sure it was to get people to buy the 80gig one, since the dropped the price on that by 100$ i think ya can only buy the 60s used now (amazon), i don't think anyone sells em new anymore
