say a person was from oakland, california back in 1969 got drafted and he decided to escape to new york. how would he find a job if he was undocumented to take care of himself? and could he be traced by the government if he used his real name for the job?

Yep, they left the country, and today they are heroes.
One of them even became president. And I don't mean President Bush.

After Jimmy welcomed the traitors back with open arms from Canada, there would be no way for them to be flagged since they weren't criminals any longer.
I suppose the ones that didn't actually leave the US probably worked under an alias with a made up social security number or worked day labor. More likely mooched off of sympathetic relatives.

Most of them went to Canada and they didn't come back until, I think, Jimmy Carter pardoned them 5 years after the war ended. Then they were free to come back. I don't know if they were able to work in Canada or not or how Canada viewed U.S. draft dodgers.

They didn't escape to New York...they went to Canada. Canada didn't care about their US draft status.

They hear about it on the "grapevine" and work on the
"black", paying no taxes, and not complaining when their
boss rips them off.

lots of them had to change their identity when they were pardoned because theindustry of america became filled with veterans who served and getting a job as a coward finally caught up with most of them
