Granulated sugar. It is really just a matter of what was considered a time saving convenience that was popular beforehand. Obviously this will vary according to the time frame. (FYI sugar used to be supplied in a hard cake so it was hard to use).

Indoor toilets! Speaking of innovations, though, I would love to personally hug the person who invented the needle threader. That tiny little device has saved me countless hours of tooth gnashing and hair pulling, trying to get thread through a miniscule needle hole, even when I'm wearing glasses and having a steady hand, and has even made sewing, which I hate, more tolerable.
