My son is sick with a virus infection. We took him to the ER last night because he was vomiting repeatedly. He's home now, and he's been on the couch all day. His heart beat is at 120 bpm. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

according to wikipedia, the average heart rate for a 2 year old is 115 bpm, so I would think 120 is fine... it's normal for childrens hearts to beat faster than ours until they're about 12.

Does he have a fever? My pediatrician recently told me that for each degree higher a child's temperature goes, his heart beats 20 bpm faster. Treat the fever and his heart rate should go back to normal.

Children have a higher BPM than adults- usually until puberty. 120 sounds pretty normal.

That's pretty much normal. It may be slightly elevated, but not by much.

It's probably always been his heartbeat, and you're only just now noticing it because you're worried about him being sick.

It would be extremely high for an adult, but little hearts are pumping less blood through little bodies. The circulation is shorter, so it's natural that the heartbeat would be faster.
