Can you make Hamburger Helper without milk? I am in a college dorm room, and I don't buy milk. Is milk an essential ingredient in order to thicken the sauce, or can you make it without?

Go to the store and buy powdered milk and make it with water as much as you need. Powdered milk can stay on the shelf. Then you have it for hot chocolate, or to put in tea or coffee. Make only what you need - the directions are right on the back.

You can make it with out the milk and the sauce will thicken up just fine. It won't taste quite the same as with the milk but it should be just fine.

I think you do need the milk. It's like Kraft dinner, you can make it with water, but the cheese really doesn't taste good that way.

But you could just buy a small milk just before you cook it and use it all up, then you don't have to worry about keeping the rest.

You can use anything creamy, really.. sour cream, cream cheese, a little more butter/margerine... even plain yogurt.. you don't need it, but you'll find that it'll be more greasy and lacking flavor without something milk-like in it.

BUT, they now make hamburger helper in microwave dishes... all you need to add is water. That might be the best option for you
