I will be arriving via Amtrak and was wondering if walking from 34th St. to 47th Street (approx 15 blocks) down 7th Avenue would be safe? I will have to shoulder type bags with me also. Or should I just grab a cab and get down to my hotel that way. If I grab a cab, I've been told it will be about $10 (my hotel told me that). I've never taken the subway before (in any city), so would rather not try to figure it out right away. I will be arriving about 10:30-11 a.m. in the morning. Would I be safe walking back to Penn Station along that same route also anywhere between 2-3 p.m?

I will be walking around once I check into my hotel, so I don't have a problem with that. It's more the fact that I'll have the luggage type bags with me and I don't want to be noticeable or a target because of that. I don't know how populated that area is either with people or if it's safe, which is why I'm asking. Thanks.

The issue might be more carrying your bags - if you're ok with that then you're fine. 7th runs downtown and 8th Ave runs uptown so if a taxi is your goal you can always head out towards 8th ave and catch a cab or walk. The Avenues generally alternate btw north and south and the streets as well (one way's). Taxi's aren't that bad cost wise and a part of the nyc experience, just wear your seatbelt like in any car.

Completely safe. Just don't act like an idiot if the opportunity arises.
Also, you're not walking down 7th Avenue, you're walking up it. You will need to turn left when you emerge from the main gate of Penn Station onto 7th.
I agree with the answerers above that walking up 8th avenue (back of Penn Station) would be less painful than trying to carry your luggage through Times Square.

It's very safe to walk up 7th ave to your hotel at just about any time of the day. The only thing you might have difficulty with is the amount of pedestrians on the street rushing by you. You will find it very crowded in Times Square. (you will be walking right in the middle of it at 42 st and 7th)
Have a nice visit and enjoy.

I've walked along NYC streets hauling luggage before (although I was with my boyfriend, also hauling luggage), and it's fairly safe. You might want to walk up 8th Avenue instead, just because it's not as crowded.

Manhattan around that area is safe. And you are arriving during a day, so even better.
