I think national cultures exist, but a collective unconscious is stretching it too far. Its an application of Freud's theory regarding unconscious processes to a given society.Jung's concept to me seems metaphysical and one could draw the conclusion that it can supplant religion. My problem is that its misapplication could result in Hitlerian thinking, in terms of Hitlers interpretation of the collective will

I think this is an extremely interesting question! I'm not sure whether I believe in the actual collective unconscious or if it's memories from past lives. But assuming Jung is right, I guess the results would depend on what the collective unconscious thinks about God and religion. Jung believed in archetypes, so I suppose God could be one of them. I don't think it has any bearing on like sins of the father being passed to the children, but it might be one reason why there is such a pervasive belief in supreme beings all over the world.

I don't think that Jung wanted to propose a metaphysical concept that is in any way supernatural and contingent on adopting a certain spiritual disposition. I think what he wanted to show is simply an observable phenomenon, that is that archetypes exist and are similar across many cultures and times. Based on the premiss that one accepts the idea of an existence of an unconscious mind as proposed by Freud, I think it is not too far a stretch to deduct that what applies to the psychology of an individual organism can also apply to a group, i.e. the human species as a whole.

I don't think he meant it in the metaphysical sense, as is so often the misunderstanding. He meant it in a more common sense way. Such as the fear of fire, or darkness, etc. We do have instincts, like any other animal. Primal fears are part of the survival instinct. Our complex minds simply interpret these things differently.

I do darling
however it does pose some questions to my own beliefs
if we are all connected , and all thoughts are out there like a living energy .. is that what we psychics and mediums tap into ?
eeek ... I do wonder about these things
there are a few reasons that favour spirit over CU in regards to messages given by a medium
but still gives me food for thought

I certainly suspect it exists and have always thought Neurotypicals have a direct link to it if they choose to tune into it. I have been trying myself, but this is my first effort at human life. Perhaps I was a tree if I had a previous life. (this is a positive notion for me as I would love to be a tree)

Actually, some Pagans have incorporated this view into their belief systems. To them, it explains some of the paranormal events a few of them have experienced.
