well i think the best way to get to know her before you ask her out is to become friends with her...trust me it works

Just ask her outright. Women like a man who is direct.
If she is taken, stay and chat with her for a few minutes before gracefully retreating and leaving her to her friends. Remain friendly. It will stand to you when she is once again without a boyfriend.

Just ask her. If you're too nervous to do that, talk to her normally and just drop it in or ask questions about any guys she might talk about.
