In Tokyo Mew Mew Ichigo is part cat so sometimes she goes, "Nya". I've also heard it in other animes. So do the cats in Japan make a sound different from cats in America? Do they make a sound closer to, 'nya' than 'meow'?

Cats are cats. They sound same.

Languages make the sound difference even if you and Japanese hear the same sound.

You feel the sound meow.
Japnese feel the sound nya- nya- , nya- nya-

it is a Lauguage problem

No, I think it just has to do with what souns exist in a specific reason. Since certain sounds are different in Japanese and English they interpret the sounds they hear differntly as well. For example, if you were to ask a Spanish speaker what sound a car horn makes more than likely they would say "Gwah gwah". Although this would sound ridiculous in English this is they way that their ears interpret the incoming sound. I'm sure if you were to do some research on onomatopoeias (I think I spelled it right) you'd probably find some more info on it.
Good luck

I've never actually been to Japan... but I highly doubt that cats talk differently there. It's most likely just how the Japanese people interpret a cat's meow.

Umm I highly doubt they make different sounds. I bet what you are hearing or thinking about is just Japanese people telling their kids what sound a cat makes like "Nya" when here in the U.S. we tell our kids that cats make the noise "meow".

meow and nya sound pretty close. It's probably just how people interpret the sound that cats make.

Domestic cats essentially say the same thing worldwide. Arguably there may be some geographic variance within the same species. What really changes is the Human language used to describe the sound.

See the link below for lots of interesting names for animal sounds. Including cats. >^..^<

Sounds like a question from a Murakami novel. If we're asking whether cats say miaow and dogs say woof, perhaps we should also ask, what does the fox say?

HAHA no they don't. That would be quite funny though. An animal of the same species act the same. It doesn't matter so much on geographical distribution. - that's only true in some cases. But no.
