Shimano reel and a Falcon rod...the Cara series. I have to support Falcon, they are down the street from where I live. Besides, they make good rods, I have 3.

A gift you say, and money is no matter!
Wheel lets go for the best in my book.
Bait Casting outfit.
Rod - Powell 705 C EX-Fast, Size: 7'
Heavy jigs, carolina rig, and frogs 7' Mag-Heavy Ex-Fast Action, 12-25 lb. Test 3/8-1-1/2 oz. - Cost $169.00
Reel - Daiwa Zillion 100SHA, Size: 100SHA
Line Capacity
(#Test/Yds) 12/150,14/125, Bearings, Ball/Roller 6/1, Gear Ratio 7.1:1, Weight (oz) 8.80 - Cost $249.95.
Total weight of rod/reel -10 OZ, Total Cost $418.95
Spinning Gear
Rod - G.Loomis - MossyBack - BSR802,
Model -MossyBack, Length - 6'-8", Line Weight - 6 -10#,
Action - Extra Fast, Power - Medium. Cost - $215.00
Reel - Shimano - Stradic MgFA - ST2500MgFA , weight - 7.9 Oz. Cost - $189.95
Total - $409.95
With either one of these rigs I would/could go fresh water fishing any where in the USA.
I have the spinning rig, the bait caster I have the rod but not the reel, have the Revo for now.
Added - Falcon makes a real nice rod, and I have about 5 both bait casting and spinning rods. I stopped buying them when they dropped their life time warranty. At the present time I own for Rods, Powell, Loomis, Falcon, H&H.
Reels- Abu Garcia Revo,- Diawa X,- Pflueger Supreme &
President - Shimano Stradic & Stradic MgFA.
That is only the rods and reels I can remember or I am still using. So I feel what I listed would be the best "FOR ME" and might not suit anyone else.

I like Shimano. I fish saltwater mostly and use a Shimano Tekota 600 reel matched with a Shimano Talora 8' 6" trolling rod, Wow what a combo. I never had any trouble with either.
Reel priced around $ 160
Rod $70

I surely ought to counter Swamp. Pflueger isn't high quality anymore, curiously. Mine hasn't ever considered a large fish and already i have had to fix it extra circumstances than i have had to fix affordable Shakespeare reels. also, i could spend extra on the rod than the reel for my section. My next spinning reel will probable be a Shimano reel and yet another St. Croix rod. in case you opt for a Triumph rod ($80), you are able to get a extra severe priced reel. If i'm going with the optimal, Mojo Bass, etc. (round $one hundred-one hundred ten), then it truly is a more cost-effective reel. yet both way, a Shimano could be nicely suitable it type of feels. you are able to't truly get the proper for that cost, yet you are able to get a respectable rig.

Fishstee.. is on the right track you can't go wrong, although I like Daiwa, either reel is good. Select the rod then match the reel to fit. Since this is going to be a gift you might ask your tackle store if they can personalize the rod for you. Maybe the persons name or some other inscription that means something to them. Adds a nice touch and only costs about $10-$20.

Daiwa Steez. Yes I could choose a more expensive Van Staal spinning reel but I would like the Steez rods and reels in both baitcaster and spinning please. Thank you!
I admit I am more than pleased with my Abu Garcia Revo STX-HS and Kistler LTA for half the price of the Daiwa Steez.
