I use royal icing. That's egg white and pure icing sugar (Confectioners sugar). It dries really white and hard, it can be colored with food coloring, and will hold peaks, swirls, etc.
To make up you beat the egg white until frothy, and then gradually beat in the icing sugar, adding enough to make it thick enough to hold stiff peaks.

Royal Icing

3 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 (16 oz box) confectioners powdered sugar

In a large bowl combine all ingredients. Beat 7 minutes with an electric mixer until smooth and thick.. A good test is when a knife blade drawn through the icing leave a clean cut. Store in a tightly sealed container if you are not using it right away.

You can also make an icing out of icing sugar, just enough milk to make it piping consistancy and a little lemon juice for a sweet but tart taste.

Any icing will do to ice and beautify the abode as quickly as that's "geared up." To get the gingerbread products to stick mutually and carry mutually is extremely yet another prospect. For that, you will want royal icing, that's egg white and powdered sugar, whipped at extreme speed till that's fluffy. i don't comprehend the formulation off hand, yet i might wager some million cup powdered sugar to a minimum of one egg white. i don't comprehend of a recipe that doesn't incorporate egg, yet in keeping with threat there is one. i don't comprehend precisely what you have in ideas, yet a exciting, rapid "gingerbread abode" could be made from graham crackers. build a shape out of unpolluted, sturdy cardboard. cut back out the abode windows, doors and different helpful properties. Then ice the abode and lay the crackers like bricks. The icing will ooze between the crackers and appear like mortar. Royal icing isn't mandatory for this abode. you additionally can use pretzel sticks, wheat thins or something to construct this abode. beautify with chocolates and coloured icing as needed. merely use your mind's eye. this sort of abode, gingerbread or no longer, will save 2 or 3 years in case you wrap it securely and placed it away adequately. ( i does not consume it, nevertheless!) reliable success alongside with your venture although that's. in case you do use real gingerbread templates, remember that moisture will reason the baked gingerbread cutouts to soften; choose for a dry day to paintings with it.

royal icing

3 1/4 cups (or more) powdered sugar, sifted
2 large egg whites
1 teaspoon strained fresh lemon juice
Assorted food colorings (optional)

Servings: Makes about 2 cups

Using electric mixer, beat 3 1/4 cups powdered sugar and egg whites until thick and shiny, adding more powdered sugar by tablespoonfuls if mixture is too thin to spread, about 3 minutes. Add lemon juice. Divide icing into portions, if desired, and add different food coloring to each. Cover until ready to use.
