Hi,
I also suggest using OpenOffce because it is free.
But I won't try to bamboozle you by telling you its "better" because it is not, unless "different" always means better.
When you use OpenOffice you should be careful about the file format that you save to. The default is not PowerPoint, but you can choose PowerPoint format as an option in Save As. You can even set PowerPoint format to be the default.
OpenOffice supports a good portion of what PowerPoint has, but it does not support popular add-ins or any visual basic. Some fonts may get messed up, so stick with common ones like Arial and Times. Some really nice PowerPoint features such as soft shadows and motion paths are not supported by OpenOffice, but for what you said you need, OpenOffice will do nicely.

OpenOffice Presentation is one example.
However, there is a program on the Adobe line called 'Adobe Captivate' which is very professional. Allows for slides with interactive content and synced audio such as mp3 or narration. Great product.
For basics though, Powerpoint from Microsoft is quite good.

Open Office is freeware and supposedly compatible with Microsoft's Office package. If an Open Office document needs to be converted, it can be done online, free, at www.media-convert.com.

If you are worried about the cost of the software, why don't you download a trial version (60 day) to your computer and use that? There are tons of tutorials online to help you make a power-point presentation.
