We used a turkey with one of those pop up timers. it was a little red plug that popped up when it was finished. anyhoo, when w had took the turkey out of the bag (it was one of those baking bags), we cut into the leg part and found a bunch of pink meat, not sure if it was pink because if wasn't done yet or because it was part of the tendons or something.

Well, they microwaved those parts only and they turned out normal color. My question is, is it normal to have pink parts near the turkey legs? or was that part not done yet.

note, it was cooked in one of those bags. thanks!

I don't think your turkey was quite done yet. Maybe it needed another 1/2 hr. Those pop-up timers are not always right.

Ok I don't rely on those timers at all. (for this reason - pink bird) Now as for the meat thermometers...well I have issues with them also. I used a real meat thermometer and it said that it should've been done - 365 degrees NOTE: (I also used a bag) so I took it out and waited like 30min. before carving and yes the meat near the leg/thigh was PINK - EKKKKKKK! (We ate the breast and tossed the rest) I will from now on still use a bag (was great taste because I also use an injector marinade) - however seriously thinking to just buy the breast instead of whole bird. OR cook for additional 30-45min.

Final note: PINK indicates NOT done. Period.

If it was right near the bone, it was probably a very young turkey. If the juices were running clear (not cloudy or bloody) then it was safe.

Get a good instant-read meat thermometer - they're $5 or $10 at Walmart, and that will eliminate a lot of guessing games.

Those popup timers are not entirely accurate and don't work well AT ALL if you put the turkey in a bag. Next time use a real meat thermometer, especially if you are going to bag the turkey.

It may not have been cooked thoroughly enough. Some will tell you that those pop up things are not accurate. The best way is to use a meat thermometer. The thermometer should read 165° inserted into the thigh without stuffing, with stuffing it should read 185°.

I've cooked some great turkeys for many years, usually using the bags, and they are always a little pink along the thigh bone. Rave reviews, and haven't killed anyone yet....that I know of. :)

no it's not normal to have pink parts in the legs but there is a reaction to cooking poultry called pinking which has to do with the nitrites and nitrates that are in both the bird and the natural gas

It was definitely underdone. That area often takes the longest.

You were wise to nuke it, may have led to a tummy ache or worse.
