He bought a laptop in late '06 and had a Windows Vista disc malied to him. He said he installed it and registered online. My question is, If I borrow his disc to upgrade my laptop, will it work? It says "Windows Vista capable" on a the sticker of my laptop. Do I have to register the software online so Vista will work? Is the software he recieved limited only to his computer?

You'll have to use the same CD Key as him. And if he registered it then Microsoft will know both of you used the same CD Key, which is illegal. So i suggest no, you don't.

Dont do it for several reasons:
1. It is a copyright violation.
2. Your computer will be different than his, and the drivers will be different, so stuff wont work right unless you can find the drivers..and even then it may not, because of Vista incompatability.
3. Vista has to be "activated", what I call "Microsoft Activation Hassel" (MAH). If you dont activate it in 30 days, your system will cease to work..that is your computer wont work. This is true even when it is a legal copy of Vista.
4. You dont want Vista anyway. It is a pain and both software and hardware does not work well with it.
Get a good operating system instead, for free. It has absolutely NO Microsoft Activation Hassel! www.kubuntu.org

I'm pretty sure that if your brother already installed and registered it, then the copy will not instal without a new code. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think that you can instal and use vista for 30 days without using a code. Unless the disk says multi-user, then you will probably need to buy a new copy.

When you install a Microsoft program, MS uses the product key, mixes it with information about the computer on which it is being installed, and comes up with an "installation ID." This IID will not match any other computer.

It will install OK, but it will not activate. It's already activated on your brothers PC. You will have to buy a license.
