Many authorities have long believed that reading is good for our mental health and well-being just as physical exercise is for our bodies. While these same scholars think that only so-called serious reading is acceptable for this practice, I think individuals must choose for themselves. For example, some athletes believe only weights and cardiovascular workouts are "true exercise"; it cannot be denied that there are a great many people who are in terrific shape as a result of less agressive forms of exercise such as Yoga or Pilates. Thus if a person is entertained and becomes relaxed by reading Danielle Steele over Shakespeare who are we to judge which genre best promotes a healthy mind.
