Hypnos

(I took Greek in College.)

The ' (apostrophe shaped like a floating comma) is the "h" sound;
The "Y" is an upsilon, and sounds like "u" or "i";
π is pi, and sounds like "p";
ν is nu and sounds like "n";
o is omicron and sounds like a broad "o";
ς is a terminal sigma (σ), and sounds like "s".

You may note that we get our words "hypnotic" and "hypnosis" from this word.

Well, katheudo is the one used most frequently in the gospels and is found at Matthew 8:24 (to go to sleep). That's when Jesus fell asleep in the boat. It can also be used to refer to death as when Jesus talked about Jairus' daughter at Matthew 9:24.

But also hupnos (hypnos) is used as well. Like at Romans 13:11.

So both katheudo and hypnos. And as has been mentioned above, because it has a rough breathing mark at the beginning, the "h" is added.

The Greek word for sleep is hypno/hypn. Which originated from the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos.

HYPNOS is the Greek word for sleep

Ypnos is the correct pronunciation.

In Greek there is no H (aitch) at the beginning but I guess hypnos is the 'English form'.

Hypnos, I think.

Probably it reads something like "Ipnos".

Your best bet would be to post this question in Travel/Europe/Greek section.

hypnos is the proper transliteration. if you are wondering, the ' in front the upsilon Ύ, designates it as being an aspirated upsilon giving it the ''h" sound.
