Official language does NOT equate to no other languages can be spoken.

* You can't speak 'text message', try to think a little harder next time*

** I didn't say 'North America' did I? It's amazing how everyone else understands the question**

Yes. Having a multitude of languages results in mass confusion and the deterioration of society. I noticed that one of the people who said no to this question quoted the inscription on the statue of liberty. Funny how the statue was a gift from France, and the French did the inscription in English. Evidently the French had more respect for our English language than modern American liberals have. Those who oppose having English as our official language are trying to weaken America. "A house divided cannot stand."

Of course it should be. You need that to maintain some sense of communication and order within society.

The problem is, we have too many wacko lefty libs who are so frightened that they just might offend someone by not catering to their every want and demand that they have created a self induced paranoia that we will not be "liked" by the world. Remember, image is everything with that crowd. Which is odd because they adapted to the very thing they hated while in their school years. You know, the popular kids who dressed and acted a certain way just to be cool. The coveted few in the school ran the place. Now, the libs want to be that minority who rules and their image means everything. Problem for them is.... school is out and the rest of us have embraced reality while they lag behind. Do you think they will take the post-high school mentality leap sometime in their life? Could happen.... I'm just saying....

Yes, English should be the official language of the United States of America. If you want to live here, learn the language. You can't expect people to learn ten different languages just so they can communicate with the people who came here from different countries. If you travel to France and don't know French, you know what happens? You are confused. Other countries don't post signs in ten different languages so why should we?

Absolutely. How does anything get done if no one can communicate w each other. Speak what you like at home, but when you are out dealing w others, speak English. It'd make things easier on everyone. Besides, I'm tired of "press 2 for English." There shouldn't even be a choice.

I'm not saying that it should be the only language in our country. But learning English should be required. There have been many miscommunications due to the language barrier.

For thoses who work in law enforcement know when you walk up on a potential suspect and ask him/her to place their hands where you can see them. And they reach for behind their back for what you may believe to be a weapon and then the officer shoots and kills that person. Later on you find out that the suspect didn't understand what the officer was telling them to do, because they never bothered to learn the primary language of this country.

Other than that I have no problem with any other languages being used. But there should be no need to cater and place signs for people who don't speak English when they should be learning the primary language of this country.

Of course it should be; our constitution and all subsequent laws are written in English.

A common language is the glue that holds a country together.

If by America you mean the US, then yes it should. It's like the mythical tower of Babel; how can you get anything done if everyone's speaking in a different tongue? Plus, these people (immigrants) want the American Dream, and here in the American Dream we speak English.

US is to some extent, and must continue to be a multicultural country, assisting those who need it by facilitating the use of languages other than English. English only is a hostile exclusionary policy and should not be adopted. I understand that proponents feel the US is engulfed by foreign cultures, but this isn't a danger. People will continue speaking English. No sense feeling threatened

Yes and this is why I feel the way I do. I was working at a place and this guy fell over with a heart attack. The other guys that worked with me did not understand English that good.I was giving the guy CPR and telling the Mexicans that worked with me to go get help and call 911. Well they just stood there and later said they didn't understand what I was telling them to do. The guy died. True story.
