I guess people who had this fear made it unpronounceable so other people couldn't say it either and they wouldn't feel so bad.

A farmer who is in the cotton buisness is barely making enough money to make ends meet and pay the workers. So, he finds out there machines, a big shiny silver ones, that will do 3 times the work as a black person. So, the next day the farmer uses the machines, and life is good. He's enjoying a steak dinner and a nice bottle of wine one day when the sheriff tells the farmer there's a problem with the machines. The sheriff says, " the machines are too shiny and it's causing people to wreck on the highway, maybe he should paint the machines". The farmer replies, " ok, yeah, I'll do that." The sheriff comes back the next day and tells the farmer everything is ok. The farmer is pissed. The sheriff asks, " why are you so angry, everything on the highway is fixed." To which the farmer says, " I painted those damn machines black, and today 3 of them didn't show up for work."
