I really want to join the military after high school. I thought I had my mind set on the Marines because I want to fight. But I heard about how you can enlist in the Army and be sent to Ranger school out of basic instead of having to wait a few years. If Im good enough with the Rangers I could try out for the Green Berets.
Which would be the better way to go?
How long would it take to become a Green Beret, once I'm a Ranger, or to even be asked to try out fo rthe Green Berets?

My choice was ARMY. I had wanted to be a Marine originnaly but I chose Army. At this time you can get Ranger school in your initial contract, I'm noy a recruiter but I believe you can enter on an 18X (I believe thats the MOS code) which is S.F. candidate. You go thrugh 11B basic/ait then jump school then SF Qcourse. If you fail you revert to 11B (infantry). Even if that could happen you can still apply for R.I.P( ranger indoc. program. Generally to qualify for S.F. it was you had to be E-4 or above and have 2 or 4 years of duty time left. The only down fall with the Marines is that if I remember correctly you list what you would LIKE to be the needs of the Corpe dictates what you get. I am sure one of Uncle Sams Miss Guided Children can correct me if I am wrong. ( I am not "dissing" the Marines just an inter-service term of endearment!!)

It takes a long time to finally make it with the Green Berets, but you will have plenty of opportunity to join them. Just go to any bulliton board on post and you'll see a recruiting ad for them.

Before you are a Green Beret, as a Ranger, you would still see plenty more action than the average grunt marine does. Of course, there ARE exceptions depending on MOS, but Ranger/Special Forces will get you the most action as they have very frequent short deployments.

Its really up to you. I am in the same postition. I have a old teammate currently in the Marines and hes very happy. However, my grandfathers have either served in the Army or the Air Force (im too big of a guy to fly, not fat but big), so im more leaning towards duty in the Army Special Forces.

Its all about who you are and if people see you as a great soldier and leader. Some may take forever, others will take the minimum. I would suggest going to goarmy.com

There they have online recruiters to help you out w/o any obligations. Good luck and hope to serve with you in a few years

You can enlist straight into a slot to try out for Special Forces. Get an 18x contract. Doesn't mean you will be SF, it just guarantees you the opportunity to try.
