There are three main reasons in my opinion:
Portion size, Lack of Active Lifestyle and excessive use of processed foods.
Portions at most restaurants are not normal. Why? Because this is what people expect, more for their money = more for their waistlines.
Many people consider walking to school, to the bus and to McDonald's exercise. Exercise is physical activity outside of your normal routine.
Speaking of McDonald's processed foods may be vitamin rich but they lack the complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fat and nutrients our bodies need. They also tend to be higher in fat so they taste better and as well as sugar or HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP! (part preservation part insulin de-stimulator).
It is not about education. The information is out there people just choose to ignore it until they are in a bad state.
The final addendum to this topic for me will be the cost of food. Which is cheaper a Big Mac or a lean whole grain sandwich at Subway, or Jimmy Johns. Not to mention at McDonalds you can get a Large Drink and Fries for the same price of just the sub at Subway.

Americans in general are always in a rush.. they don't sit down and eat with family and enjoy their food as does most of the rest of the world. They scarf down their food without prejudice.. and in doing so they are able to consume a much bigger amount of food.. because of digestion. They're already full and they don't even know it 'cause they're eating so fast. That's the main reason.. what Americans eat has a big impact as well.. like Fast Food.

the combination of high calorie diets of highly processed foods with sedentary lifestyles. people are consuming far too much of the wrong types of foods with an insufficient level of daily activity.
there used to be a time when humans would expend vast quantities of energy daily hunting and gathering foods. now super high calorie meals are readily available with in arms reach or a 5 minute drive in the SUV down the road.
food is more readily available and people are getting lazier and lazier it's that simple. apparently free will is not a good thing for the majority of the population.

I think it's all the fast food you see everywhere and also frozen foods. Most of time, people dont have time to prepare healthy food because of they work etc... so they eat the famous junk food.
Well those are my supositions ok but really there are more causes

I think it's because most Americans have such busy and hectic schedules they just don't take the time to eat right. Between jobs, kids, bills and life in general sometimes it's easier to make a quick trip to Mc Donalds than it is to take the time to eat a healthy meal. I'm guilty of doing that at times.

Food portions by far.
I used to live in Asia, and when i ordered a meal i was content.
Once i moved back to the states, i ordered a small meal, and it was like twice the size of a regular meal in Asia.

It's a bunch of factors:
Portion sizes and ease of getting calories (tons of cheap caloriest at fast food) are definitely part of it. We've also established a very automated society where we don't really have to physically do much. Even our leisure activities which used to be active (sports, etc) are becoming sedentary (video games, computers, tv, etc).
Basically we're eating more food yet moving less.

people eat more calories than they burn off in a day.
i'm actually going through health class at school and we talk about this all the time.
portions are actually getting smaller, and people just get more.
many americans sit and watch tv upward of 6 hours a day, and many more don't excercise much anymore.
the key to burning weight and staying in shape is burning more calories than you eat. for more info. google search healthy people 2010.
