as a joke, and i thought it was obvious i was joking, i asked a friend of mine to marry me. she said yes but i thought she was just adding on to the joke so i went along with it
now i think she really thinks we're getting married
i dont want to hurt her, and i dont want to ruin the friendship, but i am NOT going to marry her

Don't EVER joke to a woman that you want to marry them. The only thing you could do is tell her it was a joke. It may hurt her but I don't think it will ruin your friendship.

Make HER decide she doesn't want to go ahead. It might help if you were to be seen taking someone else out. Or make a really serious mistake, like forgetting her birthday. Or just try out some other jokes on her. She'll find then really funny!!!
But you either have to ruin the relationship, or marry her.

You're going to have to suck it up and tell her the truth. Hopefully you haven't already damaged your friendship, but marriage isn't a joking matter and your sort of screwed the pooch when you asked her the question.

That's not too hard to figure out. Tell her the truth: That your comment was just a joke...then, next time, pull your head out and think of the consequences before you go and say something stupid.

The only way is to tell her as soon as you can. Lying is just making it worse. You started the lie now it is up to you to end it regardless of the results. You owe her that for starting the lie in the first place. There are more honest ways to get sex.

Ummmm..... wow. I honestly have no clue what to say. But you better talk to her about this. She's going to be very hurt though. A word of advice, never joke about marriage with a girl. We spend our whole childhoods thinking about our wedding day, so it isn't a joke to us.

Break off the "engagement". You could tell her that you need to slow down, and you think you rushed into an engagement too fast. If I were you, I wouldn't tell her you were joking; it wouldn't help matters and it would only make her feel worse.

Be honest with her. Next time she goes on about marriage, say, "What?"
then she'll say something and say,
"No, i was joking then. You really took that seriously, didn't you?"
Trust me - you really need to say it.
But my real question is - why is this in Religion & Spirituality?
