I've learned that within the circles of Mormons there are instituted; priesthood of Aaron and priesthood of Melchizedek

a) Why are these names chosen for these "priesthoods"

b) What are the criteria’s for being elected or appointed to priesthood of Aaron?

c) Are members of priesthood of Aaron actual descendants of the tribe of Levi (Num 3:9-10)

d) On what Scriptural basis are people elected or appointed to priesthood of Melchizedek

At first it could seem like exercise in blasphemy or ignorance on LDS’s side. That’s why I am asking.

Please no jokes or ignorant answers, but instead back it up with passages from our holy Scripture.

Thank you in advance and God Bless

Thanks for this question!!! I just learned something new from it!

The priesthoods were named after the people who were originally given the priesthood by God. Aaron was given the priesthood so he could officiate in the order WITHOUT having to be from the line of Levi (Heb. 7:11-12). God decided at this time to allow any WORTHY male in the church to hold a lower office of the priesthood. This is so there were more people to officiate and help with worship services.

There are four offices in the Aaronic priesthood: bishop, priest, teacher and deacon. The bishop, who is also the leader of the ward, is over all Aaronic priesthood holders. Deacons are usually 12-14 years old. They have to worthy to hold the office, and are ordained by someone who holds the higher priesthood (melchizedek). They help with passing of the sacrament (communion). Teachers are 14-16 years old. Once again, they have to worthy to hold this office. They are supposed to watch over the church and help administer. Priests are between the ages of 16-19. They administer the sacrament- saying the prayers and breaking the bread. They can also baptize.

The Melchizedek priesthood is named after Melchizedek, who was given the higher priesthood by God. Adam was the first to have this priesthood. It was called The Holy Priesthood then. It late became known as the Melchizedek. When Moses brought the children of Isreal out of bondage, they had this higher order, but failed to live up to it, so it was taken from them, but they still had the lesser priesthood.

In the Melchizedek, there are five offices: Elder, High Priest, patriarch, seventy, and Apostle. The prophet holds this priesthood. Men who have this priesthood are the only ones who are in leadership positions. This priesthood comes with many responsibilities. Some of which are to administer to the sick or afflicted, give the gift of the Holy Ghost, administer in temple worship and pretty much have all authority in the church. Heb. 7 is the best biblical source for info on this priesthood.

Hi friend. To start off, you should know that Mormons, like Catholics, do not believe in sola scriptura. Mormons believe that God continues to speak to modern prophets just as He spoke to Biblical prophets. Modern-day revelation is given the same weight as ancient, Biblical revelation, as both come from God.

Also, you have not explained why you would consider these questions in any way indicative of blasphemy. Because you've just thrown that word out without any explanation, I won't be able to address that part of your question.

Here's your answers:

1) The "Aaronic priesthood" is named after the lesser priesthood that was given to the Israelites while they traveled in the wilderness. Because they built the golden calf, God gave them a lesser, preparatory priesthood. The "Melchizedek" priesthood refers to the higher priesthood had by Melchizedek, to whom even father Abraham paid tithes. (I'm sure you can find the biblical references yourself.)

2) In general, all active Mormon men are automatically appointed to the priesthood of Aaron when they are 12.

3) Those who hold the Aaronic Priesthood are not actual descendants of Aaron, nor are they Levites. They hold the same priesthood (authority to act in God's name) that Aaron held.

4) The Melchizedek priesthood is typically given to Mormon males when they are 19, unless the candidate is struggling with some moral challenge. In that case, the Melchizedek priesthood is given after the repentance process has been completed. Receiving the Melchizedek is largely automatic. Most active Mormon males over 19 hold this priesthood, unless they have recently joined the Church, in which case they typically wait a few months before receiving it.

Hope this helps. The priesthood has been a great blessing in my life. If you have any further questions about Mormonism, feel free to visit my site at http://www.allaboutmormons.com

The Aaronic (or Levitical) Priesthood functioned only within the tribe of Levi, and the right to have it conferred upon one was determined by lineage and worthiness. As part of his rationale that the law of Moses was fulfilled, Paul makes a point of the contrast between the lineal requirement of the lesser priesthood and the nonlineal Melchizedek Priesthood, which was not confined to those of one tribe. The lineal restrictions of that Aaronic (Levitical) Priesthood were lifted when the law of Moses was fulfilled, and thereafter the offices of the priesthood were conferred upon worthy men without limitation to the tribe of Levi. This appears to be the case in the Church as recorded in the New Testament and in the Book of Mormon (where there were no Levites), and is presently operative in the Church as it has been restored in the latter days.

Although the Aaronic Priesthood is conferred in the Church today without restriction to the lineage of Aaron, the keys of this priesthood rightly belong to the firstborn of the seed of Aaron, and in the restoration of all things the office of bishop (president of the priests) will once again be conferred on one of that lineage, as it is designated by revelation to the president of the Church.

When Jesus came, he restored the Melchizedek Priesthood to the Jews and began to build up the Church among them. However, it was lost again by apostasy, and was taken from the earth. The Melchizedek Priesthood was restored to the earth in these last days by the ministry of Peter, James, and John, who literally came to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the spring of 1829 and conferred this power and authority upon them.

a) Because that's what God told Joseph Smith to call them.

b) Right now, be a worthy (ready) male member 12 or older.

c) Not necessary at this point, but before, yes, and someday, yes.

d) First, no one is appointed or elected, they are called and ordained.
Second, we don't take authority from the scriptures, but from Christ Himself.

i could stick to the lines of Redstring. he's on the suitable song. Hebrews explains that Jesus christ is the author and finisher of our faith. Being the authro is consistent with danger much less tense to comprehend than being the finisher. How can he end our faith? in case you have faith that the sunlight will upward push that faith is performed and became to awareness once you experience this is rays and notice it upward push in the eastern sky. there's a time and a blessing given to those that have gained the present of the Holy Ghost wherein the spirit of promise comes into result. as an occasion: D&C 132:40 8-50. this occasion is whilst Joseph Smith gets this actual blessing. The atonement has finished reaches in his existence. yet another occasion is in Mosiah 26:19-20. this is the comparable blessing given to Alma for his faithfulness. The blessing additionally includes the witness provided by ability of the Holy Ghost of the Savior. This blessing is the hot and eternal covenant. it rather is a end results of the all the advantages the Lord gives you which incorporate an eternal marriage. as quickly as you have gotten this a techniques, having gained actual awareness from the Holy Ghost that the Savior lives and your faith is finished, you at the instant are a witness and you have been given the promise by ability of the Lord, basically at this factor are you able to blasphemy by contrast testimony given by ability of the Holy Ghost. it rather is as while you're staring on the sunlight and asserting it does not exist. you have taken your enterprise and made a decision based now on your finished awareness. you have shed the harmless blood by ability of now fulling rejecting the Savior's atonement and fallen from this is tentacles of redemption. At this factor it rather is declared "it could have been extra advantageous if that they had not nicely-known" the Savior. The cleansing ability of the Holy Ghost can not take result upon your existence. As for collateral harm, it rather is guy or woman. In a temple marriage, if one significant different falls away through unrighteousness or the breaking of covenants collectively as the different keeps to be straightforward, that straightforward significant different is entitled to all the blessing promised to her in the temple. Her covenants to the Lord at the instant are not broken. she will have the potential to get carry of the blessing promised by ability of the Lord. The collateral harm is indidual in term of salvation. We prepare men would be punished for his or her very own sins, and not for Adams (or anothers) transgression.
