We have a pair of boxers and the female has been in heat. They have tied 5 times in the last few days and we were wondering if each time they tie if that conceives 1 pup or multiple pups? I tried searching a few breeding pages out there but couldn't really find a clear answer. Thanks!

Wow. Didn't mean to start a huge debate with a simple question. Truth is our dogs are well cared for, and the pups are not dropped off at a shelter. We still have contact with 4 of the owners who bought pups from her first litter. We're not doing this for profit or having her crank out puppies everytime she's in heat. Please don't assume we're not responsible pet owners due to a simple question.

OK, well thanks to all that answered. I can understand some people are quite passionate about what they do and have taken those answers into consideration. I can admit when I don't know it all and with all things there is always something to be learned. As far as not breeding for profit goes, anyone who wants to send me a free Labradoodle is certainly welcome. Thanks Again and Happy Holidays!

When a dog ties it produces multiple puppies. So if they were to only tie once it can produce a whole litter. I believe their is a limited amount of eggs that can be fertilized. Usually when you breed a dog you are suppose to let them tie then wait 48 hours before you let them tie again. It takes 48 hours for a male to regenerate sperm. So in other words let them tie every other day. Rather than multiple times a day. Your better off breeding them that way so the eggs can get fertilized more successfully.

Guess you do not know much about breeding huh. The female ovulates some amout of eggs. If there is sperm, they get frertilized. If there is no sperm or sperm at the wrong time, no conception. That is why breeding should be every OTHER day while the bit ch is standing. To INCREASE the chances of fertilization. The female, as in humans, determines the number eggs released, and it is up to the sperm to get them fertilized. One tie can give 15 puppies, or 15 ties can give one puppy.
So you did this before and still have no clue???? Great. You said EXACTLY what you are...a PET owner!!! Well cared for does not mean "should be breeding". What are the OFA results on the male and female???? If you have not done health clearances, you are NOT breeding for the right reasons...you ARE breeding for money because you are not adding to the number of well-bred puppies from HEALTHY parents.
I do not see this as an "elitist" attitude. Breeding HEALTHY animals is the LEAST we can do, and the LEAST you should do. If you want to breed the worst examples of Boxers there are under the sun, go ahead......but you should not breed dogs that are not clear of genetic breed defects. There are specific health clearances for a reason. You owe it to the puppies and the puppy buyers that you produce to make sure your breeding dogs cleared these checks. And YES, the health cecks for the sire and dam may set you back several hundred $$, but that is the price of breeding!!!!!

Although you have good homes for the puppies, you are still a backyard breeder. You have a pair of boxers, I assume they're purebreds, doesn't give you the right to breed them. Have you checked your local shelters or rescues and see how many Boxers need good, loving homes? Have you had your Boxers health tested? Are your Boxers Champions? If your purchase them as pets, not for showing, that's why people here make comments for you not to breed. If you want to find out how many puppies she's going to have, you should ask your vet.

If you don't know the answer to this, you're obviously not a responsible breeder. Spay/neuter your dogs.
EDIT
Just because your dogs are well cared for and that their pups aren't dropped off at shelters doesn't mean you're a responsible breeder, nor does the fact that you're not in it for the money make you responsible.
Your dogs should both be registered show dog champions with health checks/certificates, spay and neuter contracts, and an excellent pedigree.
EDIT2 (in response to one of the answers)
Obviously, in this case, Boxers aren't sled dogs. I'm not saying show dogs are a must for breeding, but your dog needs to be extremely well qualified in SOME aspect.

Please excuse the elitist people out there that basically have anything rude to say to someone who breeds their dog. They have it in their head that their way is the only way and therefore anyone not doing it that way is irresponsible.
Also, confirmation dogs that have won championships are not the only dogs that deserve to breed. That is another elitist hoop that one must jump through in order to be "responsible". There are many, many dogs out there that have proven their worth many times over and never stepped foot into a ring for a beauty pageant.
Hunting dogs come to mind as well as sled dogs.
As for your question, I thought it was a great one and up until you asked it, I never thought about it.
Thank you for the thought provoking question and remember, pay no mind to those that only want to put you down for asking a question here, which if I remember correctly, is a forum for asking questions.
There is no stupid question, only the one's that aren't asked!
Edit: I forgot to mention, the only thing that I would hope breeders do is to make sure their breeding dogs are healthy. That does mean getting all the health checks that the breed may need to assure a healthy litter.
Hmm, what are your standards for being well qualified then?
BTW, thanks to whomever gave me a thumbs down and i am sure I will get more since I have an unpopular opinion, however, just because it's unpopular, it doesn't mean it's not true.
To the Newfie person (Not a Black ST. Bernard) I believe I said to get health checks done and I agree with that, but I don't believe that show dogs are the end all be all for selecting breeding stock.
BTW, I am not a breeder of dogs, cats or any other animal (unless you count my 5 two legged children) at this point. I have no plans to breed furry animals either. I will however be breeding Boa Constrictors when my female albino Boa and male het for albino Boa are old enough to do so.
Like I said, an unpopular opinion.

Only one time "tying" can impregnate your female. They keep tying because a dog's heat can last for several days. She is most likely pregnant already. If you're sick of them doing it, or if she's getting annoyed or he's getting possessive, you should probably separate them.

The number of ties (after the first) has nothing to do with the number of pups concieved.
PLEASE educate yourself before these pups are due.

Wow. Thanks for contributing to the already terrible situation of uncared for, badly bred boxers in shelters.
In all honesty, you need to spay your *****, neuter your dog and NEVER think of doing this again.
If you need to ask ANYTHING on YA about breeding your dog, you have NO idea what you're doing.
