A 501 (3) C non-profit dog rescue was asking for $1000 in donations to pay for the surgery needed by a little dog. Instead of giving them the money, then adopting the dog, I adopted the dog and had the surgery done. Is the $1000 I spent deductable?

No, it is not. Sorry to say that medical expenses for animals (pets) are not deductible. Once you adopted the animal, it became your pet, and the surgery costs are no longer deductible as a charitable contribution.

In order to qualify, the money must go directly to the 501C as a donation.

Nope, once you adopted the dog, it's your dog, the organization is out of the loop, and any expenses are not tax deductible. Sorry.

you will get little or no tax deduction ..it truly is so the authorities can get a much bigger proportion ..i don,t be conscious of the style you and others sense.. yet charities seem getting much less contributions from the ordinary public as they are to unsure how and the place their money is going
