suggest a different bath soap in a gentle way
sense of smell goes with age so I am sure the elderly person has no idea that the smell is so strong. telephone the doc and ask him/her to suggest the diaper.

"Aunt Flo, this is embarrassing for me, but you've always been so meticulous in your dress that I thought you would want to know that sometimes you don't smell as fresh as you could. Is there something I can do to help? If you're experiencing incontinence, and a lot of people do as they get older, I would be happy to buy you Depends. And I'll give your clothes a fresh wash as well."
Or something like that. Be sure to use the word Depends (or choose brand of your choice) because frequently the word diapers is more embarrassing to an older person. You're doing a good thing by gently pointing it out. No one wants to smell like urine.

How is that elderly prson related to you? Unless you're that person's next of kin, responsible relative, or caregiver, I'd suggest telling the one who is. If that's you, then you'd better say something like, "Grandma, have you tried Depends? Maybe it's time to."

I don't think anyone wants to smell bad like that. Sit them down and offer to wash their clothes, and if you are able, to help them bathe. Many are afraid of slipping and breaking something that could permanently immobilize them. Be a friend that can help.
