it is programed in human DNA. weight gain starts and is usually greatest in the mid-section as this effects mobility the least. imagine if a person gained 20-30 lbs and it all went to one limb. in the "wild" this would cause one to stand out as a weaker member of the pack and they would most likely be eaten by a predator, etc.

Yup..simply genetics..men tend to hold weight around the waist. Women tend to hold weight in the hips and thighs...
