changing the position of your hands does not change the mechanics of the exercise, the target muscle is still the pectorals. I don't understand the whole arms tucked in thing as that is not a proper push up.

there is no way to quickly increase strength. strength is increased as a function of training and time. using free weights and benching more than 60% of your body weight will increase your endurance in the push up. unfortunately the only way to really get efficient at performing the push up is to perform more push ups as no other exercise duplicates the exact mechanics of that exercise.

You seem to be concentrating on one part of the body so might be worth varying the press-up. Try 3 reps of 10, the first rep with you hands/arm as far apart a possible, the second as you are, and the third with both hand touching one another. Do not face or look down either, look forward instead raising your head. Always keep your feet together and body flat at one level, and on your toes if possible. You need to focus your mind and instead of aiming to do 20, aim to do 30.

Mind over matter!

I tihnk what you are doing wrong is not using your patience.

All improvements with exercise and strength training takes time.

Do your 20 press ups, then do one more. Even if it hurts, just do it.

When you go down exhale, inhale when coming up. You need to get more oxygen in your system. Then attach weights to your back , add little more as you can handle it over the weeks coming.

You just answered your own question. The way you do it focusses on the triceps and not so much the chest.
