I don't know. I think you'd have to ask a Christian a thousand years from now that question.

There will be a preaching in the 1000 years that Christ and his saints will rule over the earth.

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Revelation 20:6
King James Version

Jesus is our sabbath rest, and our sabbath rest has always been on the 7th day. This is actually prophetic of his return, because we have been here for 6000 years, and in about 200 to 300 years, we will be in the 7th millenium, or the sabbath rest. You can be sure it is sometime within that 7th millenium Jesus will return.

You believe in something else? Good luck with that. Hope it pans out for you.

Well they've managed for 2,000 years so far

The return of christ was predicted since the moment he died (or "went to heaven", "bought the heavenly farm", "rose up and cleared off back to dad" or however else it is described).

Every few years we go through this garbage of "jesus is about to return, end of days, rapture blah blah". So far the accuracy of this prophecy has been precisely ZERO. That's totally false, untrue, 100% inacurrate despite two millennia passing in which it could come true.

It won't limp on. We have only developed the tecnology that we have in the last 100 years and everybody is crazy to use the war tecnology that they have. Everyone wants nukes and you know that the terrorists will not hesitate to use them.
If Christ doesn't return, then we will destroy the world ourselves without his help.
The things that are wrong with this world are not fixable, and global warming is only one of them.
The US is trying to keep pollution down and countries like China are creating more than ever without limits, and they are one of many that are extreme polluters, Russia ranks up there with them. Not to mention how much global warming these wars create.

this planet will be limping on for many thousands of years, but their will not be any Christianity as we know it today, the Muslims will have destroyed them and there will be a time that people will be ruled by the Islamic law.

Yes, we will -- but it won't. ;-)

I believe that Creation was a literal 7-day event and that Creation is also a prophecy for the length of the Plan of Salvation. So, keeping this in mind:

2Peter 3:8 "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

Thus, we can see that sin will do its work in the earth for six thousand years:

Ex. 20:8 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Ex. 20:9 "Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
Ex. 20:10 "But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work..."

So, then, even the earth will keep a Sabbath unto the Lord:

Lev. 25:2 "Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD."

The total is seven thousand years. That final thousand years the Righteous will spend in Heaven with Jesus while the earth rests from the work of sin.

You will most likely see His return in your lifetime. Please watch the free video "2 billion to die, within the next 12 months?" and you will see why Christians believe that something very devestating will occur very soon (before His second coming)

It is called Faith.
What does another thousand years have to do with it.
No one knows the day or hour, be it a week or 10,000 years.

--TIME IS an interesting variable that few humans have any control over , YET indeed time in its exactness has to be under a greater being, God!

(Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) “3 For everything there is an appointed time, even a time for every affair under the heavens: 2 a time for birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot what was planted; 3 a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build; 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to wail and a time to skip about; 5 a time to throw stones away and a time to bring stones together; a time to embrace and a time to keep away from embracing; 6 a time to seek and a time to give up as lost; a time to keep and a time to throw away; 7 a time to rip apart and a time to sew together; a time to keep quiet and a time to speak; 8 a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.”

--WHO WOULD you say has appointed times for everything important under the sun, other than God?

--HERE ARE some indicators as to foretelling of special times:

(2 Peter 3:3-4) “. . .For YOU know this first, that in the last days there will come ridiculers with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires 4 and saying: “Where is this promised presence of his? Why, from the day our forefathers fell asleep [in death], all things are continuing exactly as from creation’s beginning.””

--(2 Peter 3:9) “9 Jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with YOU because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.”

--(Revelation 12:12) “. . .On this account be glad, YOU heavens and YOU who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a SHORT PERIOD OF TIME"
(our time, if you would care to accept factual evidence)

--IF YOUR willing to take chances with God's appointed time of Armageddon , that indeed is your prerogative, but be aware that time for things by God can have an acceleration that you or anyone who ridicules his intervention, fail to heed!

--CASE IN POINT , it was in one night that God warned the King of Babylon that his & and his Kingdoms time was up by the "handwriting on the wall":

(Daniel 5:25-28) “25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: ME′NE, ME′NE, TE′KEL and PAR′SIN. 26 “This is the interpretation of the word: ME′NE, God has numbered [the days of] your kingdom and has finished it. 27 “TE′KEL, you have been weighed in the balances and have been found deficient. 28 “PE′RES, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians. . .”

--WAS THERE A SPECIFIC time for the FLOOD, destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah etc.
--OR DO you dismiss those facts because of attention to history?

--AS FAR AS God's time limping , that is not the way he works:

(Habakkuk 2:2-3) “2 And Jehovah proceeded to answer me and to say: “Write down [the] vision, and set [it] out plainly upon tablets, in order that the one reading aloud from it may do so fluently. 3 For [the] vision is yet for the appointed time, and it KEEPS PANTING (like someone approaching a finish line-my comment) on to the end, and it will not tell a lie. Even if it should delay(in our eyes--my comment), keep in expectation of it; for it will without fail come true. It will not be late.”

***When God timed ANY matters they were never late,--only to us humans they seem to delay--
