Do these players take a normal dvd which reads at 460 and make it look like 720 or 1080i/p?

Basically, yes.

See the article at the link ... it explains how this all works and why upconverting players can be a good idea (and when they are not).

In brief, the better your HDTV the less likely an upconverting player will provide a benefit.

That said, I have a 110" screen and 720p projector, and DVDs on an Oppo upconverting player (one of the best) look so good I only see a slight improvement in video from my HD DVD player. The difference is so small I still buy DVDs and am not bothering with HD DVDs.

These players magnify and fill in rows to take the standard def video and produce a 720 or 1080 resolution.

But it cannot improve or create image or resolution that is not present. So while it works and DOES look better, it is not true 720 or 1080 video.

Also you must use a HDMI cable with these players to get the improved picture.
