Springfield Armroy XD compact... Very nice gun. Just as reliable as any of the others. 500 - 575 in price.

There are a lot of variables...

First is what fits your hand. Different models have different grip sizes. Compact models are too small for my hand to be comfortable. On the other hand, I found some 10mm and double column clip .45s are too large to feel comfortable.

Second is to pick a reputable manufacturer. It's been a long time since I've shopped pistols, but names like Glock, Smith and Wesson, Beretta and to a lesser extent Ruger are standards. I think a company named Kimber is popular for competition model .45s. Talk to the dealer about who buys what. You probably do not want the cheapest thing on the shelf.

Third, consider another caliber. I say that 'cause I'm partial to the .40 S&W - almost as large caliber as the .45, but a little smaller so you can get a smaller frame if being compact is important or more ammo capacity if that's important to you.

Finally, don't overlook items such as safety operation, how to change clips, hammer or hammerless, single action or double action, etc. You could spend a lot of money on a hammerless Glock with that trigger activated safety and then later decide you really want the option of cocking the hammer and a push button safety.

I just bought a Glock 30 last month,It works well and it shoots good.Plus it can take Hi cap mags.If you are not looking for hi cap you can allways get the Glock 36 it is pretty much the same as the 30,but it takes single stack mags.I have never shot a 36 but I have herd good things about them.

Kimber makes some very nice 1911 variants. I have never heard a bad word about a Kimber, only praise. I have not tried one out myself but the people I have heard that have them like them.

Why not have the best? If this is not the best it is on the short list. Check this thing out at your local shop.
