We need to move a boat-building workshop full of tools, wood, file cabinets from the town of Sidney on the southern end of Vancouver Island, BC., Canada, to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada. It would all fit inside a 20-foot shipping container or a 20-foot truck.... What is cheapest method: freight company? hiring a U-Haul? buying a container and shipping that? How do you find/choose a freight company? Has anyone shipped heavy tools -- did you build your own wooden boxes, or buy containters pre-made?

You need to call several companies to get estimates as to what it would cost. the cheapest way may be to rent a truck and drive them there yourself and depending upon the tools they can either be tied down inside the truck or perhaps you can just use heavy duty cardboard boxes instead of wooden boxes for smaller tools. If you do use a container or trucking company ask about insurance on what you are shipping as well since with a rental truck you can try to be certain things are packed well but that may not be the case with a trucking company or a container. Good Luck with the move!!

I know that there are freight forwarding companies now that will drop off a large rollback container at your place. Then you fill it up, and they come and pick it up. The container looks like the ones you see on large container ships, but not quite as large. They then deliver it to wherever you want. Get on the phone and start checking around.
