I've known several catholic women named mary. ;)
Seriously, I've never heard anyone call their son Jesus, and their daughter Mary, unless her given name was Mary.

Why would that be sacrilegious? It's either in honor of two very important spiritual beings or it is a cultural tradition. I don't see the offense at all.

I know Catholics who don't call their sons Jesus. But if they did , who cares ? What's the big deal ? Talk about nit-picking .

No it isn't! Some Mexican people have sons named Jesus, which is pronounced different. Mary is a very common name!

Catholics have always named their children after saints and the blessed like Mary.
Jesus, God the Son, is another matter.
Traditionally some Catholic cultures do not name their children after Jesus or Emmanuel or Salvador (Savior) and some do. It is simply a cultural thing and in no way sacrilegious (grossly irreverent toward what is sacred).
In addition, Muslims frequently name their children after Muhammad.
With love in Christ.

That's almost as preposterous as saying that 'calling children by any names mentioned in the Bible is sacrilegious'.

Differing cultures - some cultures believe that naming a child after another is the highest form of honor.

We tend to give saints' names to our children, and bypass the "trendy" names (although there are certainly exceptions). Since Mary is first among the saints and considered the best example of what it is to be a Christian woman, it's naturally a very popular name among Catholics.
The practice of naming boys Jesus is cultural, mostly Hispanic, and not at all sacrilegious in intent.

You are speaking of the Mexican Catholics. They do it out of hopes that one day when Jesus is reborn that it will be one of their children. There is one Mexican in NM who claims to be the real Jesus and is whooping it up down there! Go figure. Usually, but not always, Catholics choose a name from the bible for their child in hopes that the Child's life will be blessed by that person, but that was the old ways. Roger is not biblical nor is Moonbeam! And no, they do use the original bible and are where most Christian religions have branched off from!

I'm not a catholic, but I do know many people who are - and I don't think I know a person who has done this.
