I am taking the ASVAB next week and I want to be an interpreter for the Air Force. I plan on going and doing basic training when I graduate high school this summer (I am a senior in high school). So what would happen after basic? Like would I go to college?

If you're planning on linguistics, (languages) you'll be going to the DLI(Defense Language Institute) in Monterey, CA. You'll be there anywhere between 4 months and 16 months depending on the language you choose in Basic. It is basically like a college, except with military expectations.

I've been retired from the Air Force for 9 years now. I spent the last 10 years as an AF Recruiter. I can't recall that a 6 year enlistment option was available for everyone. There are certain career fields that will require quite a bit of training and the AF will try to recoop the money spent on that training with you working for them for a 6 year period or enlistment. With the war going on, the AF might have stepped up their incentive programs to include offering 6 yr enlistment to more career fields and offering more $ bonuses. With that option, the only thing it would give you is additional rank which equates to $. In a report that I have just read: Historical data and trends indicate 6-year enlistees have a higher propensity to reenlist upon completion of their initial term of enlistment. That said, the AF could be using the 6 yr enlistment to further increase it's already high retention rates.

If you are enlisting as a Linguist (interpreter), then after basic, you will go to california and study your language at your Tech school. Even if you get a good enough score on the ASVAB, you will still have to pass the DLAB to see what your proficiency with languages is. The language you get assigned will determine how long your tech school is. You will not be going to college until you are out. You can take classes in your offtime, but thats if you actually have off time. I never did. Good luck with that.

If you have a guaranteed job as a linguist after basic you'll go to tech school at the defense language institute. I think it's in monterey, california. It's also a very long tech school, somewhere around 12 months, if I remember right.

after basic training, you would be sent to your primary schooling to be trained in whatever job you sign up for. College will be on your own time once all that is done, and maybe not right away.

No, you will go to your training base for your AFSC. If you are going to ROTC to become an officer in military Intel (the designated HQ for interpreters) then you would go to college. Good Luck and Thank you for serving.
