It would be great if you could elaborate on your question.

By utility, are you implying with the myth that cats are only good for catching vermin?

you, obviously, have never own a cat as a pet, so your questions, I can understand.

Cats are quite smart, independent, and great companions. The key word is companion. Cats do not require as much work and attention as dogs, when kept as pets.

Why do I feel that I can answer your question, I live with two cats and a dog. They have very different dispositions.

Cat owners don't refer to their pets as a utility animal. When pet owners bond with their pet and receive unconditional love from them, the pet becomes more like a family member. A child if you will.
Cats require less maintenance than dogs do so they're easier to care for.

Because they can be more than utility animal you are suggesting. Just ask the 15 lb. purring cat sitting on my lap.

you must not have a cat. If you did you wouldnt ask that question. My cat keeps me company when my husband is doing his own thing. When Im upset or even sick she is there next to me. My husband use to not like cats, but when she showed up on our door step he fell in love with her. It has made him more caring. where a dog would leave and go else where a cat is always there. Yes of course I have spoilt my cat (her name is teeger) terribly. I know she will never leave me. I guess she is like my kid.

If you have to ask then you are obviously not a cat owner.

For that matter men are animals too & serve important functions...Why? do we keep 'yous' around?
Personally...I'd keep the cat- less hassels & unconditional love.

They are fun, they have personalities, and they are fuzzy, warm companions. I could ask the same thing about dogs, but I won't because I already know the answer: the same one I just gave about cats.

Same reason people aren't only seen as a "utility" to their jobs.

You are oblivious to the fact that people have the capability to love animals? Why would they need to justify it?
