Best FREE Antivirus is AVG
Go to http://www.download.com and search for AVG Antivirus Free Edition... download and install it.
Spyware Doctor is a good program, but I don't let it boot up at start up. I only run it on a weekly basis. It really slows down your PC and is VERY slow at booting up and shutting down.
My primary "always on" software packages are:
AVG Antivirus Free Edition
Spy Sweeper
I also use the following but I don't let them run at start up.
AdAware (free)
Spyware Doctor
CCleaner (free)
Registry Mechanic
Spybot Search & Destroy (free)
Diskeeper (defrag utility)
You can find spyware protection, registry cleaners, and defrag utilities at the download.com site I mentioned above.
Hope this helps.

Get rid of both, especially Norton. Though this will be a problem, having it out of your computer will improve its performance so much.
I followed these instructions and fully got rid of Norton.

i would only suggest freeware. The three best I've encountered are AVG Free, Avast, and Avira Antivir for antivirus.
For antispyware, Spybot used to be really good, it's still Ok I guess as a secondary scanner. Also, definitely have SUPERAntispyware in case you get some really nasty bugs. You'll be glad you have it.
Also, have ONE and ONLY ONE antivirus program at any time. They tend to have conflicts with each other. But you can have as many antispyware apps as you want.
