I keep seeing them on youtube, and by the looks of it they're mostly american. I guess that has to do with the prevalence of local newstations with helicopters?

What I've been wondering is, when the newscasters describe the chase, they use this dramatic voice when talking about the speed it's going... why? I don't get it... they're usually barely over the 100mph mark... I do that on the local highways when I'm not in a hurry. And when in a hurry, I tend to push it to the 120+ speeds.

Are the speed limits that much lower in the US? Or is it somehow unusual for a car to reach 120? Or is it just more newsworthy to over-dramatize it?

The highest speed limit I know of in the U.S. is 70 MPH. The TV shows are using News helicopters and the more dramatic they sound, the higher ratings they get for news coverage. We have police shows that show nothing but police chases.

It's typical media BS, gotta make a big deal outta everything. Think how boring it would be if there wasn't a murder or assault or whatever to talk about on the news. And no, 100 mph is not uncommon here. Wide open spaces and all that. Our off the shelf units easily do 140 and the pursuit units will run with any big bore motorcycles available. Regardless of all that you just simply cannot outrun a RADIO.

Interstate speeds vary from 55mph to 70mph. In town speeds from 20 mph to 45 usually.
No where in the USA can anyone drive like they're on the Audubon!
Cars can go 120, but it's illegal to DRIVE that fast.

Well, most of the cars you see in those chases are small cars, like Toyotas. Those cars are lucky if they can push 85 mph.

It depends on the car, and the chances are to, that it is being over-dramatized.

I think they are showing concern over the danger of killing innocent people on the highway while in pursuit.

Death comes very easily past 45mph. How many other people will you take with you is the question with how fast you go.
