Not true- it most likely originated due to the cats amazing ability to survive adverse conditions and happenings.

There is superstition that cats have nine lives, because cats can survive falls from high places with few, if any injuries. This gives the appearance that the cats return to life after sustaining a fatal accidents. Granted they may sustain minor injuries , such as bloody nose, cracked teeth, or a few broken ribs, but the do recover.

The ability of the cat to survive these accidents that would kill humans or other animals is not due to multiple lives, but to several advantages they possess. Their small size, and low body weight soften the impact as they make contact with the ground after falling from great heights. Since cats land on all four paws, the impact of landing on the ground is absorbed by all four. Additionally cats bend their legs when they land, which cushions the impact by spreading the impact, not only through bones that could easily break, but through the joints and muscles as well.

Cats being their tenacious selves, gracefully skirt near-death situations, making them seem like they have multiple lives. But why the number nine?

The number nine was a luck, mystical, or magic number because it is the Trinity of Trinities (3x3). As cats seem able to escape injury time and time again, this lucky number seemed suited to the cat.

It's a legend. Common sense tells me that neither cats nor humans are reincarnated, but there are many aspects of the supernatural that we mere mortals do not understand. Who knows where these tales originate? Could be that cats are mysterious creatures that have been known to turn up years later after they have disappeared and presumed dead. They are hardy creatures that can survive in the wilds, and they seem to have an uncanny sixth sense. But I seriously doubt that they have nine lives.

No. that's in simple terms folklore. As a teenager, the renowned occultist Alastair Crowley did actually carry out a touch messy and brutal test to be certain in spite of if his kinfolk's cat had 9 lives. It did no longer.

No. this tale comes from the fact that a cat can be very ill & sleep alot untill it gets better. they don't really have 9 lives but they can some times bounce back when you think they are done for. :)

Cat's don't actually have nine lives. I think it's just a tale made up by parents so they can make their children think that their pet will have a super long life, and it won't die for a long time.

I think it is just supersition, but I would like to think so.

Some cats live up to 20 years, so it would be nice to think they do!

Have you noticed cats always land on their feet too! xx

no. i had an indoor outdoor cat that crawled into the engine of my car. very tragic ending. the best way to keep your cat alive and healthy is to keep it indoors. also make sure to get it fixed.
