Like some people wont interact with others because maybe the other person goes against the persons religion. Do you think people are missing out on great friendships because of the fear they have from their religion?

Does the fear of god mean you don't eat sweets (a happy tongue is the devil's playground,) drink beer or flirt with your sexy co-worker?

Religion doesn't prevent people from doing anything they weren't going to do in the first place. And if it does, then the person has to ask themselves if that's really what they wanted to do anyway. The number of 'hypocrites' exposed over the many centuries argues against the statement that religion prevents people from doing anything, especially among those called followers.

Yes and no. Yes, religion can prevent people from getting to know others, but only because the individual allows that to happen. That is why I get to know the person before i get to know the religion that they follow. if our religions don't coincide, we try to move beyond that and not allow it to interfer with our friendship, unfortunatly it dosen't always work that way, but not everyone are meant to be friends either. It takes a person of strong and sound faith to be friends with someone of an unlike mind. If they are unable to recipricate that friendship than they just are not as spiritually mature as the other. That's what makes us individuals.

Absolutly! I am happy to have open minding people in my life but I know many who will no longer interact with me due to the fact that I am Pagan. I have a friend who tried to "save" me all through High School and even though he was never sucessful we became close friends. After HS he became a youth pastor and I still talk to him to this day. I also have a friend who is devoutly mormon and we get into religious debate and discussion. Having open minded people who have different religious beliefs in your life is an enjoyable experience because of the conversations you can get into. Unfortunatly many people cant see past their own belief system to get to that point.
I admit to falling into the bad habit of prejudging people at times but I try to be open minded and respectful because thats what I expect out of others.

there may be some cases where this is true. however, my best friend is a catholic, whereas i am an atheist. in terms of religion, we could hardly be more different, yet she's like my sister - i know her, she knows me - and our differing beliefs are not an issue.

It can restrict people's development of some relationships, but it could also be argued that it helps them make other relationships and introduces them to people / situations they might not otherwise encounter.

It is ignorance of people about each other, fear of unknown, and hatred for not having the same belief of all keeps them apart.
Some Christians didn't like when I invited and served only Coke with food instead of wine because it is against my religion to drink myself or serve alcohols to others. Also when I visited them and refused to drink alcohol it made them unhappy. So I figure social customs are also a problem for accepting each other.

If a woman comes in my house with low cut dress showing half of her chest and her thies in short dress, I wouldn't want to sit in front of her to avoid my gaze at her because it is sin for me to do so. When my wife goes to their house if they invite us, she would prefer to sit with women only and feels embarrassed if men gaze at her because she is used to talking to only women or her male family members.

We believe separation of sexes does keep husbands and wives together. Because in joint male and female gatherings women always find another man better than her husband and husband always finds another woman better than his wife. And then secret meetings start with the persons they meet in such gatherings. It results in cheating their spouses and end in divorces that devaste lives of many including children. Islam says do not even step on a way that will lead to committing sin later. We live much happier life following this command of God and enjoy permanence in our union of spouses in more than 99% of the Muslim families. Separation of genders in gatherings have nothing to do with discrimination and oppression on women. This is ridiculous thought that always comes in the minds of western women because most of them can not sit away from friends of her husbands and want to socialize with men to hear appreciation of their looks and revealing outfits.
On the contrary if a husbands friend of a Muslim wife makes a positive comment on her beauty, first thing that comes in her mind is why is he taking interest in me having his own wife?
