What type of reputation do you think Thailand has? Is it known as a good or bad place?

I think half good, half bad. It is known for it's beauty and friendly people. But months ago on here I answered a question about a terrible plane crash there that accused the passengers of being sex tourists :( It helped make me realize that a lot of people don't know the real Thailand.
Sure there's prostitution, but there is so much good there that the good should be thought of before the bad.
And, no, child prostitution is not legal. And it is a great place to bring a family for vacation.
I hope that the reputation only improves as people learn about the place.

Most people know nothing about it and associate it with bad things because if something from overseas and far away is going to end up on your tv screen, its usually going to be for something bad. And michaels comment is typical of people who have never been there or taken any interest in learning about it. If child sex was legal, then john mark karr wouldnt have already have been in custody BEFORE he claimed to have killed jon benet ramsey. It obviously is not like it was 30 years ago. Prostitution is out in the open in Pattaya (a small town) and a few small areas of Bangkok, but technically its not legal. Not technically legal as it is, in say, a bigger area such as Nevada or Amsterdam. Most people in USA (notice I dont say england or australia, people who are a little closer and more worldy) think that Thailand is all about sex. When Americans think of Thailand, they think about sex and pedophiles (a reputation it earned through the media in the 1970s and 80s). When Europeans think of Thailand, they think about tropical paradise for a very cheap price. They think the same thing that americans think when americans think about Hawaii and Bahamas. Americans in general are not very cultural. They dont seem to grasp this concept about Thailand, that its really paradise and the people are nice and everythings cheap. They limit themselves in life by thinking its all about the bad stuff. Im American, I used to be like them.

The only opinion that I ever heard expressed about Thailand, came from a man who went there all the time. His comment was that Thailand has the most beautiful women in the world. He was very serious. I like that vision in my head. Beauty is always wonderful!

i have travelled to thailand many times over the last 30 years and have found most thai people are very nice. i have a couple of families there that i still correspond with and they have been my friends now for many years. prostitution is the oldest profession in the world and every country has them working there, and thailand is no different. so if you really want to tag thais with this label, think about your own country first, they are probably just the same there, if the hat fits, wear it.

I think most people who come to visit here leave with a favorable impression, many never want to leave - however, for some reason, the media enjoys playing up the negative side - which often can be found in their own cities as well - so, there is a balance of perceptions out there - one perpetrated by the media looking for sensational stories - the other by actual people who have come and enjoyed themselves.

Thailand is a beautiful place, nature, adventure sports, temples, motorable roads, effective law and order.

If you are talking about prostitution then it does not concern you if you are not interested, and you can have fun if you feel like. It is legalised.

Like anyplace, it has it's good side and it's bad side. Beautiful landscape, nice people, inexpensive (to Westerners). Also poverty stricken, open to exploitation (by Westerners) and filled with vice. A mixed bag, like everywhere else....
