Why do Muslims shave their baby's head ?

Is the act of shaving a newborn baby's head rooted in Islam? What is the purpose of doing this, and is it referenced in the Qurran?

Besides the beautiful answers given above I would like to share a fact with you that Hindus in India also shave their children heads which is known as "MUNDAN" ceremony.

Muslims believe that Prophet shaved the birth hair of his children and gave charity with prayer that God blesses children and protect them.

I am not sure if it is heresay or real Sunnah of Prophet.
I once asked an Iraqi Sunni well knowledgeable Muslim leader some 36 years ago and he said it is not necessary and that he never shaved hair of his children. When ever I told to many Muslim families of India and Pakistan's, they didn't believe me. They also say that after shaving birth hair, children get much better and thicker hair.

The Benefit of Shaving the Newborn's Head Newborn head shaving is Sunna on the seventh day from his birth and the Proof for that what was said by Al-Emam Ahmad, Al Niessai, Abou Dawood, Al-Termethi, and Ibn Maja about Samra that Prophet Mohammed SAW (Peace and Blessings of Allah Upon Him): "Boy is contingented upon his Akika so Sacrifice for him on the seventh day and Shave his head by God's name ". Sunan ul-Termathi number 1522. Al-Termethi said: This hadith is Good and Authentic.

Al-Emam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad about Salman Bin Aamer about Prophet Mohammad SAW (Peace and Blessings of Allah Upon him) said: "With a person is his Akika so free him of the sacrifice and of from harm." He said that Ibn Sereen used to say if removing harm from him did not mean shaving the head, then I don't know what it is.

Ibn Al-Qayem (Allah's mercy upon him) said about the benefit of shaving the newborn's hair: Shaving his head removes the harm from him, removes the weak hair so that stronger and firmer hair replaces it and it is beneficial for the head. In addition, it comforts the newborn and opens the head's skin openings... And along with this is a strengthening of his eye sight, his sense of smell and hearing. Refer to Ahkamul Tifl: Ahmad Al-Eesawee 192.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaimeen said: It appears that shaving the head on that day has a positive effect on the hair roots. Refer to Al-Sharh Al-Mumtiaa' 7/540


Shaving the hair of a baby girl at birth or after that

It is not Sunnah to shave a girl’s head on the seventh day as is the case for boys. With regard to shaving it for a reason, as referred to in the question, if that is true, the scholars say that it is makrooh to shave the head of a girl, but it may be said that if it is proven that this is something that will make the hair grow and become thick, then there is nothing wrong with it, because it is well known that what is makrooh is no longer regarded as makrooh if there is a reason for it.

It is Sunnah of the Prophet(PBUH*) to shave your baby's head and give it a proper good Islamic name on the 7th day of it's life. To Rock:The purpose of circumcising infant males is so the penis is easier to clean and there is less risk of infection. It is part of the Covenant made between God and Abraham(PBUH*) and the descendants of Abraham(PBUH*) to circumcise their male infant sons. Girls are not circumcised in Islam as there is no reason for this. Female Genital Mutilation has nothing to do with Islam and is practiced in Central and Southern Africa by non Muslims. Circumcision also reduces a man's chance of getting penile cancer, it's easier to clean the penis if the foreskin is removed because if it was left over the head of the penis then all the urine, bacteria, and dirt would get under the foreskin and give the man infections and he would be forced later on in life to get cut as an adult. Even Christians are required to circumcise their sons. Jesus(PBUH*) was circumcised. Men who are circumcised have a lesser chance of getting an sexually transmitted disease, have less chance of getting HIV or AIDS and their wives are less likely to get cervical cancer making the women infertile.
Prophet Muhammad(PBUH*) only recommended circumcising a girl's clitoris and her labia if it was too big for the man's penis to go inside upon marriage and then you only trim 1/4 of the clitoris and labia.
