I want to study to be a medical transcriptionist. I have looked at local schools and I am unable to find one that just focus's on Medical Transcription. All the schools are for working in an office and have alot of un useful things. I don't want to spend money and then not be able to get a job. I wanted to know if anyone had taken an online course and if so how effective was it? Did you get a job? What online school did you attend? I would like to work at home. Anyone with experience please help...

It's possible to work at home in medical transcription, but getting the right start is definitely tough. The top 3 schools online are The Andrews School of Medical Transcription, M-Tec and Career Step. They're the ones you will see recommended most often, and are well known to employers. Career Step even partners with some employers, I believe.

I did work from home in medical transcription for 3 years, and I can tell you that you don't always have to have office experience first. It can be a bit harder to get started, but choosing a school with a solid reputation can really help you to get past that.

The best thing to do would be take a medical terminology course and then check in your area by running ads for others that work from home that would give you a chance. The problem is that there are so many foreign doctors out there and it is difficult to find someone who can understand them. The terminology and spelling and that comes second because it is so hard to find people who can understand the doctors. That being said I do have a few resources I use for medical transcription. Check out my website below and email me on where you are located in the US.

To work at home in that field, you'd almost surely need a couple years at least of experience in an office or other medical facility - then you might be able to find something where you can work at home, for that same employer or for someone else. With no experience, not likely to happen.
