An 80 year old gent recently told me he was enlisted in the U.K. as one of the Z-men in 1951 and got posted all over the country. Does anyone know who or what they were?

P.S, NOT the rubbish pop band or marvel comic clowns.. serious answers only, please!

A group of Australian Commandos was known as the Z Men.

I don't know why they would have been posted around the UK though, unless they were training here for some reason....

A motley fictional secret service unit known as the Z Men was the subject of a 1952 film featuring the Goons... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_Among_the_Z_Men He may have been talking about that group and having you on, just a thought.

Here's more on the real life Z Men- apparently they included New Zealanders and British as well, so it's not outside the bounds of possiblity that he could have joined them in the UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_Special_Unit At the same time, the purpose of Z Force was to fight the Japanese, I'm not sure if they were still together after the war ended...

They were second world war veterans recalled to the colours at the time of Suez in 1956
