There are many more discrepancies than just that in the Gospel accounts of Jesus' birth.
Mark and John apparently know nothing of the "Virgin Birth" at all, nor does Paul. Matthew is the only one that mentions Herod's "massacre of the innocents." The genealogies of Jesus given by Matthew and Luke differ. Etc.
And once again I get thumbed down for stating pure matters of fact. If you doubt anything I've said, crack your Bible.

They aren't different stories. Both happened. The angel visited the shepherds who came to Jesus while he was in a manger. Luke 2:8-16.
The Magi (astrologers) initially came to Jerusalem, not Bethlehem. Matthew 2:1, 2. It was Herod who sent them to Bethlehem. Matthew 2: 5, 7 and 8.
When the Magi arrived, Jesus and his family were living in a house. Matthew 2:11. By this time, Jesus could have been as much as two years old. That is why you read that Herod slaughtered male babies two years and under. To make sure he got Jesus. He had carefully ascertained from the Magi the time they had seen the "star" when they were in the east. Matthew 2:7, 16.
By the way, don't you find it noteworthy that God sent his angel to the humble shepherds (not lower class) to announce the birth had occurred? God did not send anyone to announce the birth to the Magi.
And the Magi did not really come to worship Jesus. The Greek word also means to simply do obesiance. The Magi came and showed honor with gifts as was the customary treatment for kings. Compare for instance 1 Samuel 10:24-27; 2 Kings 20:12 and 1 Kings 10:1, 10 and 13.

Both Wise Men and Shepherds came to worship Jesus. If you have ever sat on a jury you will realize the same thing can be described different ways by different people. If their descriptions were absolutely the same it would make me believe that they were in cahoots and not telling the truth.
It is hard for anyone to be on YA without realizing that we are all different people with different views, different beliefs, different likes. My friends, we are different and thank God that He made us that way.
